How often should you bleed radiators?

Radiators can be bled via very simple tools such as a radiator key. All such units will have some form of  bleeding valve. This would be located at different positions, depending on the brand and make sometimes. When you work to clear it out and if you decide to do this on your own, then you must be very careful of the water that would be coming out of the unit. It must be done when the heating system is off. The below extract will provide an answer to how often should you bleed radiators. If the system has been on for a while then the water inside it could be very hot.

So, when you will be getting ready to clear out a radiator, make sure to keep on hand some pieces of old cloth. Old rags or even a selection of old towels would also do. Some type of tray or bowl to collect the water coming out would also prove helpful. Our team at Boiler Solutions are always available to provide you with answers to any questions you may have relating to this topic. How do I know if my radiators need bleeding?

There are two reasons why you would feel the need to bleed your radiator. Firstly, you may touch the unit and feel that the top part of it is cold. This would indicate that there is air in the system. Secondly, the radiator may feel patchy which could be an indication of sludge or electrolytic corrosion. This is a natural reaction of a heating system. When you bleed it on a pressurized system such as a combination boiler or an unvented system, you will need to repressurize the boiler.

On most common radiators, such as the one that Leon is demonstrating, you will find a valve on the side, near the top part of the unit. You take the bleed key and insert it into the slot of the valve. You will notice that it fits nicely into the plastic outer sheathing, as shown. Turn the key anti-clockwise and you will hear air coming out of the radiator. If you hear this, then it means that there was air trapped in the system. If you notice black residue coming out then this would indicate the need for a power flush. That would be a good reason to call an engineer, who will also advice on how often should you bleed radiators? We have also set up a blog article on how to install Hive radiator valve, if this is something that you might plan to go for.

How often should you bleed your radiators?

Once the radiator has been bled out of all the air, you would then need to repressurize your boiler. You will continue the process until you see water seeping out of the radiator. Then turn the key clockwise and ensure that it has been tightly adjusted. Use your finger to slowly wipe out the valve to make sure no more water is coming out. After this process, you will notice that the pressure gauge on your boiler has fallen below the 1.2 bar. You will now need to repressurize your boiler back up to the 1.2 bar. If this is not done, you will experience problems due to the boiler not having enough water inside it. So, doing this on a regular basis would be a good reminder. But, to be specific, bleeding your radiators at least twice a year would ensure a good, well-functioning unit. Making sure to do this means you will have an efficient heating system, working to its full potential. A good time to also do this is during the start of winter or when you know you would begin using your heating system. Keeping tabs on your boiler’s pressure gauge is also one way to observe the level of pressure needed. Check out our video and blog on how to drain a central heating system combi boiler?
